Michael Lippman is a seasoned tax professional with more than 35 years of leadership and tax experience, most with two of the largest international accounting firms. He held an array of national and international leadership positions, including national partner in charge of the state and local tax practice, partner in charge of the Washington National Tax Practice, and partner in charge of operations support, where he had responsibilities for marketing, technology, information management, recruiting, and global strategy. Splitting his time between New York and Washington, D.C., he served many of firms’ largest domestic and international clients.
Mr. Lippman also led the tax technical development of tax-related software at Liquid Engines, then a Silicon Valley start-up, and now a division of Thompson Reuters. He joined Alvarez & Marsal as a managing director just prior to the great recession and led a team of 40 federal, state and international tax professionals through the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, and co-managed an in-house team of roughly the same size.
Beginning in 2016, Mr. Lippman rejoined his former partner, Charles Barnwell, from earlier in his career. Working together many years ago, they provided a unique blend of creativity, ingenuity, commitment, and value that significantly transformed the tax services industry. Joining forces again at Barnwell Consulting, they hope to do so again.
Mr. Lippman is recognized as one of the top state and local tax technicians in the United States, has written and spoken extensively, and sits on a number of prestigious advisory boards. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Georgetown University, graduating first in his class in both schools. He won the North Carolina silver medal for the 1980 CPA exam and was a winner of the national Elijah Watts Sells award for that exam as well.
